The Wow We Cell Phone Tower kits are classic Technology / PAT structures projects — learners build a tall wooden mast, think about base width, bracing, and why real cell towers stay upright in wind.
This guide covers the classroom idea, how to plan the build, and where to buy the kits in South Africa.
### What this project teaches
• Structures: compression, tension, and triangulation
• Stability: centre of gravity and a wide base
• Design–make–evaluate skills for PAT write-ups
• Optional: communication technology context (why towers are tall and spaced)
Real cellphone towers are engineered steel structures. These school kits are safe wooden classroom models of that idea.
### Kit options (Wow We)
• Cell Phone Tower School Project Kit (SP_02)

• Bolted Cellphone Tower School Project Kit (SP_18)
https://www.wowwe.co.za/products/school-projects-kit-bolted-cellphone-tower-sp_18
SP_02 is the standard tower build. SP_18 uses a bolted approach — useful if your brief asks learners to compare joinery methods.

### What you may need besides the kit
• Wood glue (and time for drying)
• Optional paint or markers for labelling members
• Ruler / set square for checking the base is square
• Soft surface for testing gentle side loads (do not force)
### Suggested classroom plan
1. Intro: why cell towers are tall; loads from wind and self-weight
2. Sketch: base, mast sections, cross-bracing
3. Dry-fit parts; check which pieces form triangles
4. Assemble base first, then build upward in stages
5. Light stability test: gentle push at mid-height — improve bracing if it rocks
6. PAT write-up: labelled diagram, method, results, improvements
### Common mistakes
• Building the mast before the base is square and fully dry
• Missing cross-braces (tower looks tall but twists easily)
• Forcing joints instead of dry-fitting first
• Testing with too much force and breaking glue joints
